Castle Schloss Eckartsau is probably one of Austria´s most beautiful hunting castles, if not THE most beautiful. First mentioned in the 12th century you immediately feel the history once you´ve reached the estate situated among the national park Donauauen. It was Karl I's last residence and even until today there are several belongings and furniture of Austria’s last emperor and his family left to marvel at. I was filled with awe and amazement when Elisabeth Sandfort guided me through the premises of the mansion. One room seemed more pompous than the other. You stride through Karl I's office, passing hunting trophies and a huge ball room where once receptions and parties took place, to end up in the private rooms of the late emperor's wife.
